Thomas Dunn Learning Center is a community outreach and education hub in the Dutchtown neighborhood offering a wide spectrum of classes and resources to promote individual growth and enhance the community’s quality of life. Their vision is to create a world where all people are able to access learning and community experiences throughout their lives. Their Teaching Kitchen offers cooking and nutrition classes throughout the year and camps during the summer. Classes are offered for youth, adults, or youth and their guardians. Contracted cooking instructors, community nutrition education programs, and volunteer instructors are able to host classes in the kitchen.

The facility hosts an impressive array of sustainable tenets. No bottled water is allowed on the premises, and guests are welcome to use their water bottle refill stations. They prioritize the use of environmentally friendly chemicals to maintain cleanliness and sanitation including a water/vinegar delusion chart for multiple types of cleaning and they use Safer Choice certified products. The architectural design of the building includes north facing windows for optimal heating/cooling from the sun, and they use skylights and glass-block walls to help illuminate the rooms without having to flip a switch. They have fully phased in LED lights, have smart thermostats, and motion censored lighting in some of their classrooms. They heavily promote recycling with several recycling receptacles located throughout the facility with signage to help prevent cross-contamination. They have a composting operation on-site diverting Teaching Kitchen food scraps from the landfill. They offer free bus passes for individuals needing assistance with transportation.

The Thomas Dunn Learning Center provides access for individuals seeking community and civic engagement, continuing education, diversity, equity, and inclusion, personal enrichment, and environmental sustainability.
