Batteries can contain heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, lithium, mercury, nickel, silver, and zinc. Unless they are properly recycled, these metals harm the environment and human health by leaching into surface water, air, or groundwater. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, consumer batteries contribute more mercury and cadmium to municipal solid waste than any other source.

*Pactiv cites polystyrene as a “sustainable” and “environmentally preferable” material because of its light weight and potential for recycling. Battery Recycling
Batteries can contain heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, lithium, mercury, nickel, silver, and zinc. Unless they are properly recycled, these metals harm the environment and human health by leaching into surface water, air, or groundwater.
