Battery and Electronics Recycling

Batteries can contain heavy metals, such as cadmium, lead, lithium, mercury, nickel, silver, and zinc. Unless they are properly recycled, these metals harm the environment and human health by leaching into surface water, air, or groundwater. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, consumer batteries contribute more mercury and cadmium to municipal solid waste than any other source.

The good news is that plenty of nearby places accept used batteries for recycling. This list from the City of St. Louis will point you to the closest battery drop-off spot. If you are going through lots of batteries services like Green Earth Battery Recycling provide a container and pick-up service.

*Pactiv cites polystyrene as a “sustainable” and “environmentally preferable” material because of its light weight and potential for recycling. It is undoubtedly true that lighter materials require less fuel to ship. That being said, polystyrene is not ‘sustainable.’ The EPA estimates that polystyrene – a petroleum-based material – occupies more than 25% of our landfills; it’s usually not recycled, and even if it is, it eventually breaks down into extremely small particles (styrene, a known carcinogen) that linger in soil and water for thousands of years.

Battery Recycling

Feed My Peeps

Feed My Peeps is about moving food and feeding people. The ministry was founded by a caterer and director of a culinary school. She worked in hotels and numerous companies before deciding that all this good food chefs throw away is not only sad for them, but a waste for the hungry. So she founded Feed My Peeps, picking up food from local restaurants, caterers, and farms and distributing to the homeless and families with limited resources. FMP takes meat tips and scraps, recently expired goods, vegetables and fruits, and almost anything you could imagine as long as it’s edible. Call or email Jacki to set up a donation schedule.
