THE BLUE DUCK, located in Maplewood’s Green Dining District, serves up classic American food with a twist. Their Washington, Missouri roots have connected the owners and chefs to local farmers that they use to source ingredients for specials, and they use City Farm for ingredients like microgreens, herbs, and more. They participate in the Seed to Table program, sourcing produce from Maplewood-Richmond Heights School District’s student farmers and donating proceeds from special dinners back into the program.

Their kitchen uses LED lights and Energy Star rated equipment, they have a maintenance schedule to keep their refrigeration units running efficiently, they have a white roof, and their patio is illuminated by LED string lights – all of which lowers their energy consumption and fights climate change.

Nearly all of the décor in their restaurant is repurposed, from the vintage spinning coat rack that holds their taps to the reclaimed wooden tables. They used low-VOC paint when decorating, protecting their staff and customers from harmful particles emitted from traditional paint. They only serve straws on request and try to lower their single-use plastic footprint. They don’t have plastic bags and only use plastic portion cups in to-go orders.

The Blue Duck always has vegan and vegetarian options, and they nearly always have vegan desserts in their pastry case (all of their breads and desserts are made in-house!). Diners are welcome to substitute homemade vegan falafel in any sandwich.

Be sure to visit this homey and unique corner of Maplewood’s Green Dining District, and be sure to try one of their house-made collaborative liquors, like their crème de Kakao, made from Kakao chocolate!
