Olive + Oak, located in Old Webster Groves, brings local food and a hyper-seasonal menu to the neighborhood. Local food fuels their menu with produce coming from local sources like Eat Here St. Louis, Mighty Vine, and mushrooms from Ozark Forest Mushrooms and Mushrooms Naturally. Pasture raised milk comes from Rolling Lawns. Cheese is sourced from Marcoot, Fox River, Windcrest, and Baetji. Poultry comes from Double Star Farms or Buttonwood Farms, and they use local eggs from pasture raised chickens. Red meat is sourced from Winniman Farms, Newman Farms, Creekstone, Patchwork Farms, and Slagel. Using pasture-raised animal products is important because most of the meat, eggs, and cheese available at restaurants come from CAFOs, or Concentrated Animal Feedlot Operations. CAFOs are awful for air, soil, and water quality – and bad for the animals, which live in cramped, unsanitary quarters.

Vegetarians and vegans always have options. Olive + Oak tries to make sure their dishes show off the best produce in our region. They even participate in Meatless Monday, offering veggie specials to encourage customers to try a vegetarian option.

Olive + Oak’s focus on local food extends beyond their produce and animal products. They are proud to use Union Loafers for their table service bread, and make their own potato bread, pasta, and desserts in house using Jamie’s Mill organic flour. Their head chef, Jesse Mendica, insists on using Missouri rice, which she says is “the best rice there is – fresh, fluffy, and aromatic.” Their current rice is sourced from McCaskle Family Farms. They are careful to source fish that have been caught with sustainable practices and avoid fish caught in questionable regions where regulations don’t protect wildlife. Olive + Oak offers Missouri beers, local spirits, and they showcase sustainable and biodynamic wines.

Olive + Oak minimizes their impact by using compostable straws, which are given out by request only, and only giving compostable to-go cutlery on request. Olive + Oak has a large solar paneled roof operat, fully phased in LEDs, multiple SMART thermostats, they use Energy Star rated equipment, and they use motion sensors in their bathrooms, lowering their carbon footprint and their energy bills.
