Take Me Here Using Metro Transit

Whittemore House serves up sustainability to Washington University students, faculty, and guests.

Whittemore House is able to divert much of the waste generated during food preparation and production through recycling and composting. They use vacuum sealers to extend the life of the fresh food they get in stock – a brilliant food-waste reduction strategy. They reduce single-use waste through strategies like encouraging employees to bring their own water bottles and not serving packets of condiments in to-go orders.

Employees are given transit passes, which helps encourage use of public transportation and reduces Whittemore House’s carbon footprint. They are energy conscious using LED light bulbs wherever they can, and purchasing Energy Star rated equipment to reduce the emissions from their building.

Their menu features local products sourced from Ozark Forest Mushrooms, Amish-raised chickens, and Eat Here St. Louis. They use Missouri-grown basmati and jasmine rice, bread from Breadsmith, and sustainably sourced seafood. They always have vegetarian and vegan options. Be sure to try them out on a Meatless Monday for a thoughtfully prepared, nutritionally complete, meatless meal!

Whittemore House has worked hard to create an atmosphere of sustainability for their employees and their customers, and it shows in their product – wonderful, lovingly prepared meals for Washington University clientele.
