KALDI’S COFFEE has a unique method of procuring high quality beans for their coffee:  they call it “relationship coffee.” The system works by establishing long-term partnerships with small farmers, cultivated by meeting the growers in person and guaranteeing good pay: 15% over the base Fair Trade price. Kaldi’s personal involvement with coffee farmers and their communities ensures the finest quality, pesticide-free beans and the fairest possible treatment of the people who make the coffee possible. They source their teas from Firepot Nomadic Teas to ensure they’re serving tea that has met the same standards of responsibility, stewardship, and taste as their coffee.

Kaldi’s in Kirkwood has a commitment to the local economy as well, sourcing bagels from Companion Bakery and beer from 4 Hands and Schlafly. Yes, the Kaldi’s in Kirkwood serves beer, the only location to sling brews alongside brew! During the growing season, they get some of their fruits and veggies locally from the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market.

They are conscious of their waste, and try to encourage customers to bring their own reusable mug in by offering a discount. This is important because hot coffee cups are never recyclable. They offer their spent coffee grounds to their customers to add to community gardens keeping useful material out of the landfill. Food waste is avoided by offering sides a la carte, instead of serving them automatically. Energy conservation is important as well – they use a smart thermostat to help regulate the temperature of their space remotely, they are moving to all LED lighting, and they have a high-tech evaporator in their walk-in freezer to reduce energy costs!

Kaldi’s everywhere are about to go straw-free, providing strawless cups for all of their cold drinks. Straws will still be provided on request, but won’t be given automatically!

Kaldi’s offers a vegan menu for the meatless among us, they make their own oat flour in-house. This coffeehouse percolates sustainability into every aspect of their business model. Stop in for a cup of caffeinated goodness to show your appreciation for their hard work!
