Blueberry Hill’s building, built in 1911, was saved from demolition in 1972, when owner Joe Edwards turned the warehouse into University City’s most famous restaurant. Pieces of Saint Louis history are everywhere inside Blueberry Hill, from the bar, which is around 180 years old, to the booths, which came from Gaslight Square, to the phone booth, which came from the terminal of Union Station.
Despite the challenges inherit in historic buildings, Blueberry Hill practices energy conservation through their Energy Star appliances, double-pane windows, LED lighting, and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems.
Blueberry Hill supports other local industries, sourcing their coffee from Kaldi’s and offering a huge selection of local beers, including Schlafly, 4 Hands, and Urban Chestnut. When Schlafly was first starting out, Blueberry Hill was the first restaurant in Saint Louis to carry their products! Blueberry Hill also stimulates the Saint Louis economy by ordering from Fazio’s bakery for hoagie rolls and French bread, Companion bakery for their rye, wheat, sourdough, and pretzels, and La Bon Bouche for their brioche.
Blueberry Hill is a participant in GiftAMeal, a program that markets restaurants while feeding the hungry in St. Louis. On the GiftAMeal app, each time someone takes a photo at a partner restaurant, a meal is provided to someone in need through Operation Food Search.
Located in The Loop’s Green Dining District, Blueberry Hill is easily accessed by the Metrolink and connecting bus lines. Check out this Saint Louis institution and thank them for their environmental efforts by getting yourself a local beer and trying their famous vegan red beans and rice!
