All of you ghouls and goblins will be happy to hear a spooky new ice cream shop has joined the GDA! Sugarwitch serves ice cream sandwiches, cones, sundaes and pastries at the historic Carondelet Bakery – the oldest continuously operating bakery in St. Louis, built in 1875! Sugarwitch still uses the old bakery equipment and repurposed most of what was left – old refrigerators and proofing boxes are used for display and storage. With the witch theme and the historic building creates a whimsical, slightly nostalgic and charming place to visit.

Owners Martha Bass and Sophie Mendelson began creating ice cream sandwiches for friends and family in 2016 as a form of self-care and eventually developed this passion into a thriving business at the southern tip of St. Louis. Both Bass and Mendelson are guided by their commitment to building a more equitable food system. They donate whatever they can to a variety of community organizations. The owners and staff are committed to their community and revitalizing the neighborhood.

Sugarwitch’s rotating seasonal menu highlights the best fruits and flavors from local farms and dairies, sourcing from Farmstead Foods and Rolling Lawns Farm whenever possible. Their sourcing is top notch with locally produced eggs and even herbs from a family member’s garden. There’s even an apple tree in their backyard they use! Sophie has really taken the time to source the best for Sugarwitch whenever possible rather than taking the easy route with 1 or 2 big vendors. They use leftover materials like the “‘witch ends” to create new menu items and new ice cream flavors.

Each sandwich is named after some of your favorite sorcerers and witches, like Ursula from the Little Mermaid or Elphaba from Wicked. In addition to sandwiches, Sugarwitch serves Waffle Tacos, reminiscent of childhood favorite Choco-Tacos. Complement the sweets with beverages ranging from house-made cold brew made with beans from fellow GDA member Coffeestamp, tea from Big Heart Tea company and locally produced Excel soda. Their ice cream floats are a must try on hot St. Louis summer days.

With its ornate stained glass (peak under the awning), murals from a local artist, and an endearing patio, Sugarwitch is the perfect spot to bring your loved ones for a sweet treat that allows you to taste the love in each bite.
