Perennial Artisan Ales, located in the Patch neighborhood of South St. Louis, is a brewery focused on local, fresh ingredients for their beers . The adjuncts (ingredients like ancho chili, vanilla beans, apples, honey, and coffee beans used to flavor beer during the fermentation process) are not additives, but whole ingredients, locally and/or responsibly sourced whenever possible. Relationships with other local businesses has been a key element to Perennial’s success, partnering with local farms and companies like Honey Hive Farms to supply honey for their Glitter and Gold beer and Sump for their coffee stouts.
Sump Coffee partners with Perennial Artisan Ales on their wonderful coffee stout. The beans are used in a steeping process, instead of the more common cold toddy method, saving approximately 1,300 gallons of water per batch, and are then composted, giving organic material a second life while fighting climate change.
Straws are only available upon request at Perennial – a fantastic conservation strategy, as these single-use items either wind up in a landfill for hundreds of years or litter waterways, injuring and even killing sea dwelling creatures and migratory birds. Water conservation is important for every brewery, and Perennial Artisan Ales is no exception. Drinking water is available in a self-service cooler with reusable cups. The brewery also reclaims the potable water sent through their heat exchange, using it to clean their tanks instead of sending it down the drain. Rain barrels are paired with the pergolas located in the newly upgraded patio with LED stringer lights, perfect for outdoor activities.
Working closely with Jefferson Solid Waste Management they have put in a lot of work to divert spent hops and yeast from going into the waterways sending them off with Total Organics Recycling to be composted. And what about the spent grains you ask? Well, they’re getting set a side for local farmers, such as Espenschied’s Maple Lawn Farm in Freeburg, IL and Wagner Cattle in Red Bud, IL, to come and pick them up by the truck loads to feed their pigs and cattle which is a great sustainable method to reuse spent grains and reduce food waste. They send off approximately 2000 metric tons of spent grains a year.
Perennial Artisan Ales is one of a few PakTek (can carriers) recycling collection points in St. Louis City. While PakTek plastic is recyclable and is marked as such, they can not be recycled through your household pick up due to their weight and shape. Perennial collects all PakTek can carriers, not just the ones from its brewery. They reuse the ones they are able to (clean, unbroken, and the correct size) and sort the rest to take to RePoly/Granite Peak Plastics to be recycled. Bring in your collection of PakTek can carriers with pride and grab a brew while you’re there.
Perennial Artisan Ales is a must-visit location in South St. Louis and is easily accessible using Grant’s Trail and River Des Peres Greenway bike routes. Take a tour of their brewery on the weekends or enjoy their tasting room, open Wednesday through Sunday.
