Civil Life Brewing Company
GDA Rating:
Take Me Here Using Metro Transit
Civil Life Brewing Company, established in 2011 by owner Jake Hafner and friends, is known for its traditional craft beers and commitment to civility. GDA’s newest 5 Star member is also dedicated to sustainability. The cozy two-story English style pub specializes in malt-focused and sessionable, low alcohol beers. Their recently updated food menu features small bites, creative bar snacks, delicious soups and sandwiches made with fresh, local ingredients.
The south city brewery is powered in part by 125 American-made solar panels on their roof, which generate about a third of the brewery’s energy needs. This renewable energy helps power their 20-barrel brewhouse, substantially reducing their carbon footprint. A farmer picks up their spent grains every week to feed livestock, and a composting system for the kitchen is in the works. Civil Life earned high ratings in waste reduction, recycling, food sourcing, water conservation and energy efficiency.
Civil Life actively engages with the local community to promote environmental initiatives. Thanks to a friendly and dedicated neighbor, the area surrounding the brewery is filled with native plants. In 2024 they partnered with the Grow Native! program to host a “Brews & Blooms” event featuring native plant giveaways, container gardening demonstrations, and expert advice on native landscaping.
Enjoy the native plantings in the warmer months and their heated patio the rest of the year. Taste some of the best soups in St. Louis on their popular Soup Sundays. Come experience Civil Life’s culture of respect, civility and inclusion in the warm, two story space tucked away just off Chippewa and Gravois in the city.
