Citizens for Modern Transit’s annual CMT & AARP Great Race and Metro Market is Weds., June 14 from 4 to 6:30 p.m.! The Great Race promotes awareness about the different modes of active transportation available to commuters while demonstrating the strengths and weaknesses of each transit mode.
You can cheer for Team Bike, Team MetroLink, Team MetroBus, or Team Carshare. Teams will each face a variety of unique challenges in order to win.
If you aren’t commuting in the race this year, you can still participate in the fun! Food trucks, a bike tune-up station, fresh produce from Seeds of Hope, games, and more will be in the Loop’s Green Dining District – the finish line is at the Wabash Station near the Delmar Metrolink stop.
Active transportation – cycling, walking, and public transportation – has been proven to lengthen life spans and improve well-being. Walking to and from public transportation can help commuters to meet the Surgeon General’s recommendation for thirty minutes a day of physical activity – meaning adjusting your commute could reduce time spent at the gym!
Cycling has its own array of benefits, including reducing stress in the workplace. Plus, cycling in St. Louis is a blast! The GDA is partial to cycling; our Program Manager is an avid bike commuter who uses two wheels to visit the 100 restaurants in the Green Dining Alliance. Restaurants who have bike racks and encourage employees to take transit get bonus points on their annual audit for encouraging active transportation and reducing their carbon footprint.
