“Shop Local” is embedded in every aspect of Kakao Chocolate in Clayton; their specialty coffees come from String Bean and are Fair Trade Certified, and their chocolates are all made locally at their Maplewood location. The shop sells tea from Traveling Tea, locally made cards, and handmade lotions. Selling so many local items helps to build a strong local economy; money spent in your community is money that stays in your community.

In addition to the local products they sell, Kakao uses local ingredients to make their own products. Kakao uses peanut butter and tahini from Eastwind, fruit and veggies from the Schlafly Farmer’s Market, Missouri pecans, and local honey in their products.

Kakao reuses the same shipping material until it is unusable between stores, reducing their waste footprint considerably. Kakao uses all compostable or recyclable service-ware, from their coffee cups to their straws, and they compost all of their food and coffee-waste, keeping organic materials out of the landfill. They use paper bags instead of plastic, which is important, because plastic bags cannot be recycled in single-stream systems.

Kakao offers water to their customers in compostable cups instead of bottled water, which is excellent, since bottled water is a such a wasteful use of resources. It takes three times as much water to make each bottle than it does to fill it, and it takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce the plastic, which rarely makes it to a recycling facility.

Kakao cares about their customers, their environment, and their community. Stop in today and treat yourself to a responsibly sourced chocolate coffee drink!
