Taking Me Here Using Metro Transit
O’Connell’s Pub is a revered St. Louis institution located at the Kingshighway and Shaw intersection nestled between The Hill and our friends at EarthWays Center. There’s a lot of history here including a pair of charming 1904 World’s Fair chandeliers that greet you as you enter the nostalgic pub where the lighting is set low and the decor is likely older than you. The pub features LED lighting, recycling, hyper-local sourcing from Pete’s Bakery on The Hill and whole chickens from Buttonwood Farms. John Parker Jr. has taken the reigns of O’Connell’s Pub and has ambitious plans to reduce its carbon footprint by implementing composting, solar panels, and intuitive wind turbines.
O’Connell’s Pub uses all compostable products and reusable dishes, glassware, and flatware. If you have leftovers they’ll hand you a piece of aluminum foil, which can be recycled when crunched into a ball the size of a golf ball. Nearly all of the decor is secondhand acquired either from antique deals, which previous owner John Parker Sr was passionate about, or from the storied past of the institution. O’Connell’s Pub recycles and has a goal to implement composting by the end of 2023. The menu features a black bean burger for vegetarians. Desserts are locally sourced from Fazio’s and Park Ave Coffee.
To help combat food waste, most of the food items that O’Connell’s serves do not come with sides. If you’re ordering a beer you can choose a 12 oz., pint, or pitcher pour. Every burger is portioned and weighed before it’s cooked to perfection on the griddle.
O’Connell’s has a parking lot in the front and back where you can find native prairie flowers working their way into grass areas surrounding O’C and it also has a purple martin house. O’Connell’s Pub is a time honored establishment that is choosing to adapt its practices to more environmentally friendly operations because they believe it’s the right thing to do and what our region needs more of. Grab a pint of beer from a local brewery or one of the best tasting Guinness’s in STL, grab a burger, and catch a live jazz show featuring some of the most talented musicians in town!
